The Gujarat police on late Tuesday evening released Hardik Patel, hours after he was detained and taken to police headquarters. Patel, who has been spearheading the Patel community’s agitation for reservations in Gujarat, is the convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS).

Patel launched a hunger strike after the rally at the GMDC ground without permission, and police arrested him there.

“He was detained as Patel sat on Dharna (and hunger strike) without taking police permission,” a senior police official said. “But after we received reports that his detention could worsen the situation, he has been released.”

Earlier in a mega show of strength for their demand of inclusion in OBC category for a reservation, the Patel community warned that if they are not made eligible for quota, the BJP government in Gujarat will face consequences in the 2017 polls.

After the rally, Hardik Patel, who is spearheading the agitation, said he will sit on a hunger strike at the venue until the Chief Minister (Anandiben Patel) comes to take a memorandum from them.

Hardik Patel is a graduate of BCom, who worked with his father, a farmer, in his submersible-pumps business in rural Viramgam, near Ahmedabad.
