Guwahati, May 11 : At least eight people were killed and several others injured in lightning strikes and thunderstorms in Assam in the last 48 hours.
An Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) official said eight people were killed during the storm and lightning across the state.
Two people died in Karbi Anglong district and six others died in lower Assam’s Kamrup, Barpeta and Kokrajhar districts.
The power supply was disrupted in many areas as electric poles were damaged, trees uprooted and the roofs of many houses were blown away.
In Karbi Anglong district, a 50-year-old man, Mohan Baishya was killed in Howraghat town, when an uprooted tree fell on his house.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) Project Officer Kripal Jyoti Mazumdar said six people died due to lightning in one area and two others died in a violent thunderstorm.
This is not the first deadly weather event this year. The ASDMA official said so far this year, 64 people died due to lightning and storms.
