Diphu August 8:
A possible case of sex determination and torture of a woman by her inlaws came to light on Friday in Bokajan town in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam.
Sangita Gupta, a victim of inhuman torture, finding no other alternative, sought the help of civil societies to save herself and her infant girl child. Although she filed a case at Khatkati police station against her husband and his in-laws, police did not take any action until filing of this report.
Local members of the Mahila Sumity, the All Assam Student Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Chatta Parishad (AJYCP) submitted separate memorandums to SDO (Civil) demanding the immediate arrest of Sangita’s husband, Lukesh Gupta, and her in-laws.
The memorandum also demanded that half of Gupta’s property be given to Sangita along with a monthly allowance as alimony.
Sangita, the daughter of Birendra Shah of Sukhanjan married Lukesh, son of Niklesh Gupta of Tila Basti, in 2013. Sangita’s parents paid a huge dowry to Lukesh Gupta’s family as claimed by the victim’s family.
Sangita’s parents alleged that her in-laws came to know the sex of the unborn child and started mental and physical torture to kill the unborn child when Sangita was about six months pregnant.
