Guwahati, March 14 : The Samajwadi Party (SP) led by Mulayam Singh Yadav will contest 37 seats in the Assam assembly poll. The assembly poll is to be held in two phases, the first starting on April 4 and the second on April 11.
The Samajwadi Party’s Assam unit president Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury said the party will contest 11 constituencies in the first phase and 26 constituencies in the second phase.
Candidates list for six of the 11 constituencies in the first phase have already been selected. The candidates are – Samir Uddin Laskar (Hailakandi), Jamal Uddin Laskar (Katlichera), Sahidul Islam Laskar (Algapur), Sahin Ahmed Choudhury (Silchar), Aparna Tewari (Udharband) and Haji Alauddin Choudhury (Katigorah).
Candidates for the other seats have not yet been decided. “Names of candidates for other constituencies for first and second phase will be announced after approval by the party,” Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury said.
The BJP is bringing in the big gun for this election, as PM Narendra Modi is to visit Assam on March 25. He will kickstart the party’s campaign, addressing four rallies.
“Modi will campaign for BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal in Majuli and other three rallies likely to be held in Bokakhat, Karimganj, Gahpur of Bihpuria,” a state BJP leader said.
