Diphu August 2: The Speaker of Assam’s Legislative Assembly has appointed MLA of Diphu constituency Bidya Sing Engleng Chairman of a committee on tribal affairs formed with twelve other elected tribal Members of the Legislative Assembly.
The one-year appointment to the committee begins on 29 July, 2021. The term of the appointment is initially set for one year, but may be changed if a new committee is constituted. The official announcement to this effect was made through an official notification; no LATA, 100/2021/1181, 31st July 2021. The notification was made by S.K. Sharma, Assam Legislative Committee Secretary.
Mid-last month, Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the creation of a new department of Indigenous Faith & Culture, constituted to safeguard the interests of Assam’s tribal population. The new department will also control the Directorate of Archaeology, Directorate of Museum, and Directorate of Historical and Antiquarian Studies. The Department’s primary objective is to support tribal art, culture, religious traditions, folk songs, and identities of ethnic groups.
Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, Assam’s first female finance minister announced the allocation of 100 crore Rupees for the new department in the Assam Budget Session.
