GNRC began in Maligaon, Guwahati, as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre in 1984, with participation and supervision from the late Dr K V Mathai, a neurosurgeon from Vellore. GNRC became a limited company in 1985, and GNRC Ltd formed in 1987.

Borah owns the GNRC Medishop retail chain, selling hygienic FMCG goods, groceries, personal care items, and medicines. He also serves as managing trustee of the Asian Institute of Nursing Education.

GNRC Universal Health Mission

ANEI’s citation pointed to initiatives linked to GNRC Universal Health Mission, including GNRC Medireach and Swasthya Mitra. It also highlighted the Asian Institute of Nursing Education, established in 2004, as a centre for nursing education and leadership.

Dr Borah dedicated the double national awards to patients and their families, along with colleagues, mentors, students, and the GNRC team. “I remain committed to make healthcare more ethical, equitable, and accessible for all,” he said.

GNRC began as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre and later expanded into a chain of tertiary care super-specialty hospitals in Assam and West Bengal. Dr Borah’s earlier honours include awards in 2017, 2022 and 2023, alongside the latest double national awards.
