Guwahati, July 27 : Security forces on Thursday destroyed a United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent hideout (ULFA-I) in the Tinsukia district of upper Assam. A large cache of arms and ammunition was confiscated.
Troops of 9th battalion Rajputana Rifles and Assam police received information about the militant group and launched a joint operation in the thick jungle area of Lakhipathar forest division in the upper Assam district..
By the time the troops arrived at the remote jungle area, the militants had already escaped.
Security personnel destroyed the militant group’s hideout, recovering arms, ammunition and money. Included in the haul were four pistols, one revolver, two rounds from a 40mm Multi Shot Grenade Launcher, 11 rounds of 9mm revolver ammunition, 16 rounds of 2.2mm ammunition, one AK-47 round, a radio, battery with charger and mobile phones, demolished notes of Rs 1.49 lakh and other warlike stores.
The operation was launched as a pre-emptive measure against the ULFA-I militants. The militants have been preparing for subversion and sabotage activities against security forces, to commemorate ULFA-I’s Martyr’s Day to be celebrated on July 27 (Friday).
This operation is a part of major ongoing crackdown by security forces against all of the insurgent outfits active in upper Assam.
