Guwahati, November 26 : A Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant died in an encounter with security personnel in the East Garo Hills Friday night. Local police reported the killing of the militant, a member of Meghalaya’s Garo outfit, on Saturday.
Meghalaya police received information about a group of militants in Songmarge village, and the police commando unit launched an operation there, around 8-45 pm on Friday. Songmarge village is in the hill district. The commandos killed one militant in the firefight, but the others escaped.
“When the security personnel reached the remote area, the militants took shelter and started firing. Bullets were exchanged from both sides. A hardcore militant was killed on the spot and others of the group managed to escape,” a top police official said.
Police identified the slain militant as Ruga. He was part of the 6th batch of GNLA, having trained in the Durama Hills general camp.
The security personnel recovered his body and weapons, including an AK series rifle, one pistol, and several rounds of ammunition.
